BINTULU: A young family of three have now been left homeless after their house, located in a squtter area in Sungai Plan, Jalan Pesisir Pantai Bintulu-Miri, was razed in a fire last night.

Bintulu Fire and Rescue station chief Christus Buson said a team was deployed to the scene located about 17km from the station as soon as a report was received at 7.42pm.

"When the team got there, they found that the fire was already raging and had nearly destroyed the house which was located very close to other houses," he said.

Christus said firement used two hoses and water from their engine to fight the blaze, adding that the going was difficult due to the close proximity of the house to other houses in the squatter settlement.

"At the same time they were fighting the blaze, firemen also had to carry out the cooling process on nearby houses (by wetting the houses) to prevent the spread of the fire," he said.

The fire was finally extinguished at 8.35pm.

Christus said the occupants of the house were a young couple and their 3-year-old son, who are now living at a relative's home nearby for the time being.

He added that the cause of the fire and estimated losses were still under investigation.
