KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has conveyed his condolences to Gerik Member of Parliament Datuk Hasbullah Osman's family over his death today.

"Hasbullah was my former political secretary when I was the Deputy Prime Minister. He played a major role in charting my political path, of which I am deeply grateful.

"We have shared many moments together and his death is a great loss to me," he said in a Facebook post today.

Muhyiddin also described Hasbullah as a "wakil rakyat" (people's representative) who had always raised matters related to the people in Parliament; and his friendly disposition had made it easy for him to be close with anyone.

"On behalf of the government, I wish to extend our utmost gratitude to what he has done throughout his years as the people's representative and as Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) chairman."

Datuk Hasbullah Osman, the four-term Gerik MP, died today due to a heart ailment. He was 63.

His death was confirmed by Perak Umno chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad, who said Hasbullah died at the Raub Hospital in Pahang.

Funeral arrangements, he said, were being made, adding that Hasbullah would be buried tomorrow.

Hasbullah, who was also the Gerik Umno chief, served as an MP from 2013. In 2008, he served as the Temenggor assemblyman and was also the Perak Umno deputy chairman.

In the 14th general election, Hasbullah from Umno secured a 5,528 vote majority to win the Gerik seat, defeating candidates from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Pas.
