GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Health Department has denied claims on the emergence of a new Covid-19 case in the state recently.

Its director Dr Asmayani Khalib told the New Straits Times that a viral message about the purported case was fake.

Earlier, a notice allegedly from the southwest health district office addressed to a man in Taman Seri Sari, went viral on social media, which claimed the man could have been exposed to the virus.

A WhatsApp story status was uploaded today with the caption "Bayan Lepas, stay safe everyone. The second wave is coming" and has since gone viral.

Asmayani confirmed the notice from the district health office but denied there was any new Covid-19 case reported as of today.

She clarified that the notice was for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) surveillance.

"The said person has been tested. Alhamdulillah, the result turned out negative.

"We urge the people not to create panic by sharing such issues and adding on unnecessary and unverified information," she said when contacted today.

Penang has been maintaining its green state status since May 4.

No new Covid-19 case has been reported until today.
