KOTA BELUD: Eighteen flood victims were evacuated to a temporary shelter centre following continuous heavy downpour in the district.

Dewan Masyarakat Tun Said was opened at 8.30pm last night to shelter victims when water inundated 17 villages in the district.

Among the affected villages were Kampung Kota Belud, Siasai Tamu, Bobot, Ejuk, Menunggui, Lebak Engad, Sembirai, Lingkodon, Donggoi and Marajah.

Others include Kampung Lebak Moyoh, Sadok-sadok, Gunding, Linau, Karang Benai, Taun Gusi Keranjangan as well as Tanjung Pasir.

District Civil Defence officer Jimmy Alberto Tining said the victims comprise 14 adults and four children.

"Following four hours of continuous rain, the volume of water increased in the upstream of three rivers in Kedamaian causing them to break their banks.

"One of the rivers, Sungai Abai, reached a warning level of 5.19 metres," he said.

"The flood situation at all villages is improving but the roads at Jalan Lebak Moyoh Bypass Kudat ,Jalan Kampung Lingkodon,Kampung Donggoi and Kampung Song-song are still impassable for some cars," he added.
