KUALA LUMPUR: The headquarters for Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has been closed for three days, starting yesterday, after one of its employees tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19).

Following the closure of the office, located in Menara Tabung Haji Perdana here, the commission said its employees were allowed to work from home, while all activities and programmes have been temporarily suspended.

“Suhakam was informed on an employee who tested positive for Covid-19, although we are not sure if the employee was infected in early March. Nevertheless, we are taking measures to identify his close contacts. They will be required to undergo tests.

“Suhakam is also taking measures to contain the spread of the virus, especially among our employees. We are also working closely with the building’s management and Health Ministry to sanitise the premise.

“Although the risk of being exposed to this virus is small, people who have been visiting or interacting with our officials since March 2 are advised to contact the District Health Office and have a check if they have any symptoms.

“All the difficulties involved in dealing with this matter are deeply regrettable, and Suhakam will update on this matter from time to time through our website and social media,” it said in a statement yesterday.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah previously reported that 20 new cases of Covid-19 were detected until noon yesterday, bringing the total number of positive cases in Malaysia to 149.
