KANGAR: A technological system to detect disasters and provide early warnings to the people should be implemented and utilised in the country to alert Malaysians to any impending natural threat.

The system should employ the latest state-of-the-art technology in order to adequately warn residents and minimise loss of life and damage to property, said Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun.

She said last Friday’s severe thunderstorm and accompanying high winds in northern Peninsular Malaysia was only detected after it struck Langkawi.

“As such, I hope we could have in place a system which is more swift in detecting disasters, before they take place.

“If it’s possible, we want the warning to be disseminated much earlier to the rakyat to ensure that misfortunes could be avoided,” Rina said here, today.

Earlier, the minister distributed aid to storm victims at Kampung Sempering in Santan.
