SEREMBAN: There is no need to bring back the 26 Malaysian students in Sudan following the latest political development and safety concerns in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said this was due to the locations where the students were staying which were not affected by the incident.

“At the moment, the Home Ministry notified that they (the 26 students) are safe. Maybe it is better for them to stay since (the incident) has not spread to the place where they are studying,” she said after attending a Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House at the Seremban Munipal Council here today.

It was reported that all 48 Malaysians in Sudan, consisting of 26 students, 10 embassy officials and 12 Malaysians working there, were safe despite the political turmoil in the Republic.

The Home Ministry in a statement today said the Malaysian Embassy in Khartoum had contacted all registered Malaysians including the students in its effort to ensure their safety.

Commenting further, Dr Wan Azizah said Malaysia welcomed the recent agreement reached between the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the Alliance of Freedom and Changes Forces (AFCF) to resume negotiations over the formation of a joint sovereign council that would lead the political transition in the country.

She said Malaysia urged all parties in Sudan to exercise utmost restraint to prevent any further violence against civilians and to ensure respect for human rights.

“We strongly condemn the attacks on innocent people and call for the incidents to be thoroughly investigated, with those responsible held to account immediately,” she said.

She also expressed hope for the situation in the country to return to its normal state and for the each issues to be resolved immediately as the act of killing the innocent should not have happened.
