CHERAS: Hundreds of parishioners gathered at the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi here to celebrate the passion of Jesus on Good Friday earlier today.

The event was to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ in the solemn service that was celebrated by visiting priest Rev John Anandan.

“Good Friday is not a joyous celebration for Christians. The death of Jesus gives new life for everyone. His life, death, passion and resurrection gives everyone the gift of eternal life,” said parish priest Rev Andrew Manickam.

The second part of the service continued with the veneration of the cross where the congregation kissed the hands and feet of Jesus.

“The significance of the veneration of the cross is that it commemorates Jesus’ passion and sufferings,” said the parish priest.

The service concluded with the congregation leaving the church in silence to reflect and meditate on the death of Christ.

Good Friday takes place during Holy Week which is a part of the Paschal Triduum (Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday).

After this day, Christians will move on to Holy Saturday, where they commemorate Jesus lying in the tomb and proceed to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday.
