JASIN: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sempang in Merlimau here has been ordered to close for two days (tomorrow and Friday) after four rooms at the administration building of the school caught fire this evening.

State Education Department director Datuk Abu Bakar Sahari said, however, the two-day leave only applied to the school’s 192 students, not the teachers.

“I declare an emergency leave for all students at the school for two days, but teachers still have to come,” he said when met at the scene.

Abu Bakar said the four rooms that caught fire were the teachers’ room, senior teacher’s room, administration office and a small part of the headmaster’s room.

“The security guard noticed smoke at the back of the building at 5.40pm and contacted the headmaster before calling the fire department,” he said, adding that there were no injuries or deaths reported as school was not in session.

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Rohaya Alias said 20 personnel from Merlimau and Jasin Bistari fire stations were rushed to the scene after receiving a call at 5.45pm.

“Initial investigation found 80 per cent of the two-storey building was destroyed. The fire was successfully contained at 6.21pm and completely put out 15 minutes later,” she said.
