SEREMBAN: Nomination process for the Rantau state seat by-election is now underway after it opened at 9am today.

Election Commission (EC) returning for the by-election Mohd Nizam Tajul Arus made the announcement for the start of the nomination process at 8.50am at the nomination centre in SJK (C) Bandar Seri Sendayan, here.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Dr S Streram and Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan have both entered the nomination centre.

Present to lend support for Dr Streram are PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as well as PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Also present was Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Mohamad, a local in Rantau, was accompanied by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri and Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Ahmad Maslan, together with several Umno and PAS leaders as he made his way into the hall.

Among party leaders present were Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, Wanita Umno chief Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad, Rembau Member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin and Federal Territory Umno Liaison Chief Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

Shortly after, Independent candidate R Malar, 51, was seen making her way into the hall.

Nomination will close at 10am and the EC is expected to mame an official announcement of the candidates set to contest the Rantau seat by 10.30am.
