PUTRAJAYA: A revised education module for children in primary schools is hoped to raise greater awareness on road safety among the young.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the National Revised Road Safety Education Module for Primary Schools, launched today, was produced via smart partnership between the ministry and the Transport Ministry.

He said the module was implemented at all primary schools beginning this year.

Maszlee said contents of the module were previously absorbed in the teaching of Bahasa Melayu in primary schools since 2007, with lessons for at least two hours a month.

“The module was revised in 2016 to ensure it runs in parallel with the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR), involving teachers from the ministry and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros),” he told reporters after the launch of the revised module today.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke who was also at the event said the revised module was an improvement in content, illustrations and interactivity level through the use of video, audio and animation.

“The objective of the module is to improve knowledge and awareness on road safety among school children who will become future road users.

“As a preparation to execute the revised module, about 15,000 Bahasa Melayu primary school teachers underwent training last year to learn how to incorporate it into their teaching.”

Loke said the revised format should also incorporate the six-hour ceramah (talk) module for Form Four students to prepare those wanted to obtain driving licence.

“By incorporating it into the new module, we can do away the six-hour talk before applying for driving licence. However, this is still at planning stage,” he added.
