GEORGE TOWN: All non-Muslim places of worship must be registered and receive the necessary approval from the state's Town and Country Planning department.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said first of all, they must obtain planning permissions through the one-stop-centre prior to the construction process taking place.

“Yes, all these institutions need to get the necessary approval so that they are properly registered and recorded.

“They cannot simply build structures,” he told the NSTP when contacted.

Checks on the state Town and Country Planning website found details on the process for the construction of non-Muslim places of worship.

Jagdeep said all technical information and background of the projects would then be referred to the non-Muslim places of worship coordinating committee for discussion.

Meanwhile, for the construction of Muslim places of worship, it is subjected under the Penang Islamic Administration Enactment 1993.
