KEPALA BATAS: The Immigration Department will build its first ever Immigration Museum in the country, here in Penang.

Its director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said many people were unaware that Penang was among the earliest state to carry out immigration duties.

He said the department had agreed to choose its office in George Town, located within the heritage enclave, to be modified into the Immigration Museum.

“The 100-year-old office building is nostalgic, especially to those who had worked there.

“As such, the Immigration office in George Town will be relocated to a new site, and surely discussion will be held with the Home Ministry and the Federal Government in the near future,” he said when met at the state Immigration Department gathering here today.

Mustafar said the proposal to build the Immigration Museum was still in the discussion stage with the Penang government, which has shown favourable response.

“If all goes well, we hope to start work in early next year and have it completed within the same year.

“The Immigration Museum will serve as a knowledge depository so that the people will better understand the functions of the department in preserving the nation’s harmony,” he added.

Present was state Immigration Department director Meor Hezbullah Meor Abdul Malik.
