BANGKOK: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says more people will face charges for offences committed by the previous Barisan Nasional administration.

Speaking on the raft of corruption charges laid out against his predecessor Datuk Seri Najib Razak, former Treasury Secretary-General Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah, as well as former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) chief Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid, the prime minister said there are "many more" to come.

"What we are seeing today of course is charges being made against several people, but there are many more.

"But we can't bring everyone to court at one go.

"We have to take one by one, and the most serious is the former prime minister (Najib)," he said.

Dr Mahathir added that Malaysia suffered for almost nine years under the BN administration as the previous government did not seem to care about its people.

"It committed many wrongdoings. And when you break the law, you face the consequences," he said.

The prime minister was speaking during a meeting with the Malaysia Thai Chamber of Commerce (MTCC) on Thursday.

These, said Dr Mahathir, were among the measures being taken by the present government to resolve issues brought about by the previous BN administration.

Irwan and Najib were both charged with committing criminal breach of trust involving amounts of RM1.2bil, RM655mil, RM220mil, RM1.3bil, RMB1.95bil (RM1.261bil) and RM2bil.

They pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
