PALU: The Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapim) will deliver a total of 2,000 tents and 10 tonnes of food supply to victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi Tengah.

Mission chief Dr Ahmad Sani Araby Al-Kahery said the council had been sending early aids to the region since Tuesday.

He said Mapim was among the first Malaysian humanitarian teams to arrive at the site to carry out disaster surveillance and extend help to the victims.

“Our volunteers will dig a well so that the residents could get clean water supply soon.

“We will also distribute tents and kitchen essentials to the victims,” he said.

Ahmad Sani said Mapim would also dispatch 10 teachers, 15 doctors, 10 activists, including Civil Defence Agency personnel to the site on its next mission on Oct 10.

“We have so far collected RM160,000 from public donations since two days ago. It is hoped that more Malaysians would contribute and help the victims,” he said.

He said the situation at the region was still critical and that the victims relied on contributions from others including Malaysians.

As of 1pm on Wednesday, the Indonesia National Disaster Management Body (BNPB) revealed that death toll stood at 1,407 people.

Over 30,000 people were badly affected with the earthquake and tsunami on Friday and had to spend the nights on the street and nearby hills.
