PETALING JAYA: PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took his campaigning for Pakatan Harapan's (PH) Seri Setia by-election candidate to the dance floor tonight.

At a cultural night event in Desa Mentari, here, a Malaysian Indian look-alike performer of famous Indian legendary actor M.G. Ramachandran or MGR was miming to "Naan Aanaiyittal" when Anwar got onto the stage and danced to the tune of the 1960's song.

The song was from the movie Enga Veettu Pillai.

About 500 residents and guests present gave a thunderous applause to Anwar's performance despite his shoulder injuries and he was later given a flower garland as part of the welcoming ceremony.

The performance took place during his campaign trail for Seri Setia state representative hopeful Halimey Abu Bakar during the Indian Community Cultural Night With Anwar, here.

The by-election on Sept 8 will see Halimey go head-to-head against PAS' candidate Dr Halimah Ali.

The Seri Setia state seat fell vacant after incumbent assemblyman and Selangor executive councillor Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin passed away on Aug 2 after a battle with cancer.

Anwar's campaign today for the PH candidate in Seri Setia took place with the Chinese and Indian community separately in Desa Mentari and another one with the Malay community at Ara Damansara.

In his campaign trail, Anwar repeated his pledge to contest in a parliamentary seat soon.

"I don't have any position now. When my time comes, I will take over from Tun Mahathir," he said referring to current Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"At the moment my wife (deputy prime minister Datuk Sri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) is my boss," he said.

However, he added that this did not deprive him of his responsibilities in helping the government, which currently, according to him, he was doing in many ways.

Anwar also sought help from the audience to support the PH leadership under Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as well as the Seri Setia candidate.

"We need a strong mandate at the federal and state level. There are lots of work to be done after 61 years. We have only been ruling for four months and we need time to make changes."

Anwar said Malaysia was a rich state and needed to be administered well, adding that "we should not allow billions of ringgit to be lost again."

"I think the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should catch those who abused their positions and put them in Sungai Buloh prison," he said.

Anwar also asked all the Malay, Chinese and Indian supporters to support PH.

"A lot of Malays, Indians and Chinese have helped. We will ensure, that we will also help them back in ways that we can," he said.
