KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition backbencher today defined the Sales and Service Tax or its acronym of SST as being - ‘‘senyap-senyap tambah’.

Datuk Ahmad Maslan (BN-UMNO Pontian) used the phrase during his debate on the Service Tax Bill 2018 debate, which took place today.

“Outside (outside Dewan Rakyat) there, the youngsters say - 'slow-slow tipu',” he said as his remark was followed by laughter from the other members of the August House.

Citing an example of the six per cent sales tax impact, Ahmad said it would see restaurants and fast food joints increasing their profit, as they already have in place a 10 per cent sales tax.

“The effect is that the consumers would be burdened with an overall tax of 16 per cent for each and every product and service,” he said.

Ahmad also proposed for a 30 per cent service tax be imposed on Casino’s, lottery premises, gambling machines and other gambling related products and services.

“Why only six per cent ? You should impose more then that, in fact, it would be better off, if you can shut it down,” he said.

He also called upon the people to be prepared as he expects pre-paid mobile phone top-ups price to increase, following the implementation of the tax.

“I hope the people would assist us by utilising the social media to whack the PH (Pakatan Harapan) as your pre-paid card would had increased in price.
