KUALA LUMPUR: Airline companies are free to decide on the uniforms for their stewards and stewardesses as long as it is within the rules outlined by the Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar said this meant that the dresscode for Malaysia Airlines Berhad's in-flight crew would remain.

He informed that the current uniforms for in-flight crew must suit the requirements of their job in order to ensure they were able to carry out safety related duties in the time given.

"The commercial decision by airline companies in deciding the uniform for their in-flight crew is based on suitability and corporate image," he said, adding that in the case of Malaysia Airlines, the uniform chosen was in line with the identity of hospitality they practise.

"In general, the uniforms for Malaysia Airlines' stewardesses are decent," he said, answering a question from Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa) during the question and answer session in Dewan Rakyat today.

Ahmad Marzuk wanted to know the government's action to ensure uniforms for in-flight crew members were more syariah-compliant.

Kamaruddin explained that the government and related departments were always working to ensure policies could be carried out in line with what is required in Islam.

"I respect everyone's struggles but give the government a chance to continue working towards a better administration," he said.
