SHAH ALAM: The Sungai Kandis state seat remains with PKR after its candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni secured 15,427 votes in the by-election held today.

Mohd Zawawi beat Barisan Nasional's (BN) Datuk Lokman Noor Adam who managed 9,585 votes and independent candidate K. Murthy who only secured 97 votes.

A tahfiz school principal, Mohd Zawawi won with a 5,842-vote majority.

The results were announced by Election Commission (EC) returning officer Datuk Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad who is also Shah Alam mayor, at Dewan Besar Tanjung in Section 19, here.

The by-election today involved 19 polling centres and 109 streams that opened at 8am with 789 EC personnel in place to monitor the election process.

Polling centres closed at 5.30pm.

Voter turnout, according to Ahmad Zaharin was at 49.4% of 51,217.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of PKR's Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei due to cancer on July 2.

In the May general election, Mat Shuhaimi won the seat by garnering 23,998 votes, defeating BN’s Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari (11,518); PAS’ Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573) and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s (PRM) Hanafiah Husin (76).

The Sungai Kandis seat was called Sri Andalas prior to a redelineation exercise this year.

The seat was introduced in the 2004 General Election.
