KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to get Australia’s view on former police officer Sirul Azhar Umar, who is currently detained at Villawood detention centre in Sydney.

Dr Mahathir will meet Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop this week.

In a press conference held at the Parliament today, Dr Mahathir said, "I will discuss on a few matters with Bishop."

“Not specifically (on Sirul), but I want to know the position of Australia on the issue.”

Former chief inspector Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar, in 2009, were jointly convicted of killing Mongolian model and mother of two; Altantuya Shaariibuu on Oct 18, 2008.

Sirul Azhar then fled for Australia after the Court of Appeal overturned the High Court’s decision in 2013.

He was detained in the Villawood detention centre for overstaying his tourist visa.

However, on January 13, 2015, the Federal Court convicted Sirul Azhar and Azilah and sentenced them to death over the 2006 murder.
