GEORGETOWN: A popular briyani restaurant along Chulia Street, here, has been ordered to close for two weeks after checks by the state Health Department found the premise to be dirty.
State Health director Dr Wan Mansor Hamzah said they found the cleanliness level of the restaurant to be unsatisfactory after checks discovered cockroaches' breeding grounds within the premise.
"A health officer issued a two-week closure notice to the restaurant, effective today, because checks found the restaurant to be operating in an unclean condition.
"It is understood that this is not the first time the famous restaurant has received a temporary closure notice due to cleanliness issues," he said when contacted tonight.
Dr Wan Mansor informed that in an operation that began at 8am today, at least 11 food premises have been issued with temporary closure notices, including two food processing factories.
He said the operation was conducted around George Town and ended at 10pm, involving some 15 health enforcement officers.
"Apart from the famous briyani restaurant, we also issued a closure notice to another restaurant that was once featured on the Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan (television) programme," he added.
