KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) should be returned under the purview of the Entrepreneur Development Ministry.
Deputy Entrepreneur Development Minister Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli said the institution, which was established in 1966 and aims to develop entrepreneurship skills for Malays and Bumiputera, should be placed under the ministry as it is now in charge of entrepreneur development and could assist them through various platforms.
“MARA needs to be returned to the Entrepreneur Development Ministry after the ministry was abolished about nine years ago and placed under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
“Although many of its activities and operations involve other fields, it is specifically aimed at developing the Malay and Bumiputera economy; we think that MARA should be under the purview of the Entrepreneur Development Ministry,” he told the media after a Hari Raya celebration organized by Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) in Bandar Tasik Permaisuri, here on Saturday.
The event was officiated by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad, who is also Amanah communications director, and Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar.
Hatta said there is no need for MARA and its related agencies to be revamped.
“I think MARA does not have to be revamped, and institutions like Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) need to be maintained,” he said.
