ALOR STAR: The Education Ministry is not ruling out the possibility that bullying was an element in an incident involving a secondary school student in Shah Alam, who was beaten up by his classmates as part of the school’s purported ‘birthday celebration tradition’.

The violent affair was captured on video, which went viral after it was uploaded to social media platforms.

The beating is believed to have occurred in February this year.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the ministry is leaving it to the police to investigate the incident and will decide on the next course of action after receiving a full report on the incident.

“We are leaving it to the police to investigate the case first, and we will decide on the next course of action once we receive a full report from the probe.

“At the moment, we are not ruling out the possibility that it involved (an element of school bullying),” he told reporters after a working visit to Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid here today.

Since the surfacing of the video, police have rounded up nine students to facilitate an investigation.
