PENAMPANG: Safryan Zaki, the 13-year-old SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin student scheduled to undergo football training in Barcelona, can now rest easy after receiving new football boots.

The Form One student had lost all his sporting gear including a pair of new football shoes worth RM700, after his school hostel caught fire on Monday.

Safryan received a pair of football boots worth RM699 and sports gear from a donor in Selangor.

“I am grateful to whoever made the donation to ensure I have what I need.

“My sports teacher Medi Marau, who accepted the contribution, took me to a sports shop in the state capital to buy the items.

“I am very excited to go through the training programme in Barcelona,” he said when met at the school, today.

Safryan is among the Malaysian students chosen for the Overseas Training Programme in the under-14 category, organised by a television station.

The student who hails from Tawau said, SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin’s parents and teachers association chairman Adelaide Cornelius and two other teachers will help him shop for other essentials needed to get him ready for Spain.

Safryan will leave for Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, and will leave for Barcelona on Thursday. He is expected to return on March 26.

In the 7.30am hostel blaze on Monday, about 117 students were affected when the boys’ hostel block was gutted. However there were no casualties as all students were in class for school session.
