SUNGAI PETANI: The Federal Government will review the People’s Housing Project (PPR) Transit Home policy to enable tenants to buy their units through a rent-to-own scheme.

Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar said the move was aimed at helping low-income families own their own homes at a nominal cost without having to secure loans from financial institutions.

“We hope that through this initiative, the tenants will be more proactive and make their neighbourhood a better place to live in. Currently, many of them do not bother to take care of their surroundings since they do not have a sense of belonging to the units,” he said after visiting PPR Harmoni Transit Homes in Paya Nahu here today.

Present were state Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Badrul Hisham Hashim and state Education Committee chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain.

Noh said tenants at the PPR Harmoni Transit Homes would be eligible to buy the 592 units at RM35,000 each, through a rent-and own scheme.

Currently, the tenants are paying a monthly rent of RM90.

Noh said the state government would be carrying out a survey to identify tenants who would qualify for the scheme.

He also announced an addition RM6 million allocation on top of the RM2.6 million allocation announced last May to carry out maintenance and beautification projects at the PPR flats here.
