KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Athletics Association (POS) will be lodging a police report against the organisers of the Klang City International Marathon after the organisers failed to obtain the approval from the sports commissioner.

POS president, Datuk S. M. Muthu said their action is meant to avoid such similar incidents from being repeated in the future and to prevent any untoward incident from happening.

"We do not want to take a hard stance nor stern action, but we do not want such tragic incidents to happen in the future, so we will be making a police report on Friday morning at the Petaling Jaya police station and we will handover whatever we have to the police with regards to the matter.

"We would like to stress that we were not involved in the organising of the the marathon in any way,” he said when met after the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) press conference at Wisma Malaysian Olympic Council (MOC) here earlier today.

The issue involving the marathon even has garnered widespread attention and scrutiny after three participants were involved in a hit and run accident along Jalan Kapar Batu 2, and initial investigations have revealed that the marathon did not have a permit from the sports commissioner’s office.

Yesterday, Sports Commissioner Datuk Zaiton Othman lodged a police report against the organisers of the marathon at the Sri Petaling police station.

This is following instructions by Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin who wants action to be taken after the event was organised without approval from his ministry as the custodians and higher authority for any sporting events and functions in the country.

According to the Sports Development Act, any sports program that is organised must obtain the approval of the sports commissioner and failure to do so is an offence.
