KUALA LUMPUR: National leaders have called on Malaysians to uphold the spirit of the Festival of Lights, and unite as a peaceful nation this Deepavali.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak led the call in a special Deepavali video posted on social media platforms on Sunday.

Najib said he hopes this year’s Deepavali will be celebrated simultaneously with the country’s most recent achievements.

“Although we are moving faster in our climb to reach the peak of modernity with various facilities already in place, the uniqueness of our culture remains.

“Now, Deepavali is back to grace the atmosphere. The lamp is lit and the ‘kolam’ reflects a peaceful merriment. As with the shine brought by the light, let us come together to spur our spirit of harmony in line with the achievements made every day,” he said.

The Prime Minister also expressed his wish that this year’s Festival of Light be a memorable one for all communities.

“It is hoped that this year’s celebration will be a beautiful moment to be remembered for all of us as a family. Happy Deepavali, Deepavali Valtukal,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, meanwhile, posted his Deepavali greetings on his Facebook page.

Zahid said: “Hopefully, this year's light festival will shine brighter. (We wish) the country greater prosperity. Happy Deepavali 2017. #Negaraku.”

Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan also wished everyone a Happy Deepavali on his Facebook page.
