MELAKA: Nine Bangladeshi men, who attempted to enter Melaka illegally, were arrested after their boat landed, by mistake, on a beach where military camp, Terendak Camp, is situated, last Thursday.

State police chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said the men, aged between 20 and 42, were discovered and detained by a soldier on patrol before they were handed over to the police.

"Nine immigrants were believed to have entered the state illegally through the shores of the Terendak Camp but were detected by an army officer on duty on Sept 28 at about 12.30pm," he told reporters at the Crime Prevention Carnival between the police and youths today.

He added that the suspects were arrested to facilitate investigations under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.

"We assure that the safety of the military camp is not compromised following the landing of the Bangladesh nationals here," he said.
