PENDANG: A 16-year-old boy was crushed to death in an elevator mishap at a hardware store near here today.

It was learnt that the victim, Muhammad Zaim Zaini, was loading some mattresess into the elevator on the ground floor of the two-storey shop when the car rose abruptly, trapping the upper half of his body.

His colleague, who found Zaim's motionless body, immediately contacted the Fire and Rescue Department for assistance.

Jalan Raja Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Jasbir Singh Tara Singh said the rescue team arrived at about 3.30pm and took about 30 minutes to release Zaim's body.

"We could not move the elevator so we had to use a power tool to make some space between the car and the wall to remove the victim's body," he told reporters at the scene.

He said the victim's body has been handed over to the police for further action.
