SANDAKAN: Six recreational parks under the purview of Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) will be gazetted as non-smoking zone beginning June.

District Health officer Dr Johari Awang Besar said the parks were Taman Harbour view, Taman Sea view, Taman IJM Batu 6, Taman Abdul Razak, Padang bandaran Sandakan and MPS square.

He said the local authority would put up signages at those areas to remind visitors not to smoke.

"We have been promoting the no-smoking zone since last year but there seems to be no improvement.

"When the gazette comes into effect, there will be operations conducted from time to time. Those caught will be fined RM100," he said when contacted.

Dr Johari added that other buildings that have been gazetted as non-smoking zones are the Sandakan airport, schools, government buildings and air-conditioned food premises.
