PUTRAJAYA: The government has pledged to roll out a fresh set of guidelines for the salary scheme of the country's civil service by the end of next year.
Emphasising the complexity of the process, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the salary alignment study, typically conducted every 10 years, requires extensive coordination across various government departments.
"Before the end of this year, as we transition into the first quarter of 2024, we aim to provide some guidelines to ensure harmonisation with the government's financial capabilities
"This is in preparation of the eventual announcement of a new salary scheme for civil servants before the end of next year," he said, in his speech before presenting the Public Sector Innovation Excellence Awards.
Reiterating his announcement in the 2024 Budget, Anwar said the government has announced a special allowance of RM2,000 for the civil servants and RM1,000 for retirees, as an interim solution on the matter.
"This measure is intended to alleviate the financial strain that may have arised during this period. These allowances will serve as an immediate response while we progress with the comprehensive salary alignment process," he added.
In August, the government announced that it was preparing to provide detailed information about the salary increase for approximately 1.3 million civil servants ahead of the presentation of the 2024 Budget in October.
Deputy Finance Minister 1 Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan had stated that the increase in pension payment costs for retired non-pensioned military personnel would also be detailed.
