KUALA LUMPUR: Police today assured the public that the country's security and public order were under control.
Federal Management Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said several incidents in various locations nationwide have raised concerns among the general public regarding the level of national security and public order.
"Police take seriously several incidents of attacks and threats that have occurred in public places, including some sensitive locations and recent government premises.
"In continuous efforts to ensure public safety, police remain on high alert and have tightened security controls to the highest level at government buildings, public gathering places, and critical facilities," he said in a statement.
Azmi said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has directed all levels of leadership within the force, as well as policemen on the ground, to take comprehensive measures while carrying out their duties in compliance with circulars, standard operating procedures and current directives issued.
He urged the public to cooperate by providing any information related to national security issues to the authorities.
"Police will not compromise with any elements who may attempt to threaten security and disturb public order. Firm action based on the law will be taken regardless of the status and background of those involved."
Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had said police were investigating several attacks targeting important national institutions to determine whether they were random acts or part of a coordinated plan.
He had said the authorities were closely monitoring the situation and had launched immediate investigations for each case.
On May 17, a masked man killed two constables and wounded another at the Ulu Tiram police station before being shot dead.
A day later, police arrested two men who tried to trespass into Istana Negara with a parang in their car.
