KOTA KINABALU: A businessman linked to 'Gang Upik' failed in his bid to be released on bail pending disposal of his trial.

High Court Judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng dismissed Nelson Yen Yee Chung's bail application when the case was brought up for a decision today.

Yen, 46, filed his application on March 12 this year.

Yen was among 13 individuals, including a Datuk, who were charged with being members of "the organised crime group Gang Upik", reportedly Sabah's largest drug syndicate, at the Sessions Court here.

The other accused are Rahman Burijin, 44, Jaisalfian Jaineh @ Zaini, 45, Mohd Fauzie Rablin, 33, Shahlan Shah Abdul Samad, 37, Datuk Maslan Sani, 41, Mohd Faridzul Asmahadi, 31, Fazrul Bahar, 32, Alkan Abraham, 35, Mazlan Mahmud, 41, Mahathir Jibarail, 49, Norsyafilah Pawawoi, 27, and Zulkahar Dusing, 38.

All the accused were alleged to have committed the offence between 2015 and 2024.

They were separately charged under Section 130 V(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between five years and 20 years on conviction.

Earlier during the proceedings, the prosecution informed the court that they applied for Yen and other accused's cases to be heard together.

The prosecution also said that the purpose of joint trial also for the safety measures.

All the cases are waiting for the trial dates to be given.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lina Hanini Ismail and Siti Hajar Mat Radzi appeared for the prosecution while Yen was represented by counsel Datuk Ram Singh.
