BATU PAHAT: A 64-year-old man was jailed a month by the magistrate's court today after admitting to stealing sardine tins, mouthwash and Nescafe from a convenience store on Thursday.

Jamaluddin Yusof pleaded guilty as soon as the charges against him was read before magistrate Suhaila Shafi'uddin.

According to the charge sheet, the security guard was accused of stealing 10 tins of sardine, four bottles of mouthwash and two bottles of Nescafe at the store in Parit Raja, here, at 1.15pm that day.

Jamaluddin was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which allows for a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine.

According to the facts of the case, an employee of the store had stopped the accused and found the stolen items on him.

In mitigation, the accused, who was represented by counsel Kamarul Arifin Nordin from the Legal Aid Foundation, asked for a light sentence as he had to look after his children.

However, deputy public prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip asked for a sentence commensurate with the crime as a lesson for the accused.

The court then ordered that Jamaluddin be imprisoned for a month from the date of his arrest.
