ISKANDAR PUTERI: The state police will recommend a suspension of duty for two policemen who allegedly extorted RM1,000 from travellers at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) checkpoint here.

State police chief Commissioner M. Kumar said extortion is a serious allegation, and two complaints have been lodged against them by alleged victims.

The policemen are yet to be suspended, but have been transferred out of BSI and assigned to desk duties.

On April 5, police received a report from the first victim who claimed that he was extorted at the CIQ checkpoint three days earlier.

On Friday (April 19), the second victim came forward claiming that the duo had extorted RM2,000 from him on Jan 4.

Following the recent report, the policemen were remanded to facilitate investigations, which expires tomorrow.

"Once our investigations are completed, it will be forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor for the next course of action," Kumar said at the change-of-command ceremony at the Iskandar Puteri district headquarters.

At that ceremony, Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan took over the reins from acting district police chief Superintendent Ibrahim Mat Som.
