PETALING JAYA: A husband and wife who were under the influence of drugs were arrested by police after mistakenly mixing their baby's formula milk with liquid methamphetamine.

The incident, which nearly claimed the baby's life, occurred at a flat in Taman Medan here on Feb 19.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Jaafar@Ismail said they received information about the incident reported by Kajang Hospital on Feb 20.

"It is understood that the one-year-four-month-old baby was sent by the couple to his 55-year-old grandmother's house in Seri Kembangan on the day of the incident.

"While under the care of his grandmother, the baby did not stop crying, was overly active, and difficult to control. The woman then asked the mother of the baby about the cause of the baby's strange behaviour.

"At that point, the 34-year-old mother admitted to mistakenly mixing the baby's milk with methamphetamine belonging to her 40-year-old husband," he said.

As a result, he said, they detained the husband and wife at their home in Taman Medan on Feb 20.

"The initial urine screening test conducted on both suspects found them positive for drugs.

"Further checks also found that the male suspect, who works as a stall drinks seller, has a record related to drug cases," he said.

Shahrulnizam said the baby is now under observation at Kajang Hospital and reported to be in stable condition.

"Both suspects have been remanded for seven days for further investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001," he said.
