KUALA LUMPUR: The 30-day extension granted to Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir to declare his assets was due to the extensive nature of his assets, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said.
He also said Mokhzani could also apply for another round of extension but such a request would be subjected to a review by the commission.
"Based on the briefing by the investigation officer in-charge of the case, I believe that the extension is necessary.
"This is because the assets involved are many and he (Mokhzani) needed more time to obtain the necessary documents and details of the accounts involved.
"Furthermore, we received good cooperation from Mokhzani as well as from (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's other son) Mirzan to assist our investigation into the case," he told reporters after attending the 10th Certified Integrity Officers (CeIO) Convocation ceremony here today.
Asked if Mirzan could apply for another round of extension once the initial extension period ended, Azam replied: "They can apply, but we will look into it first."
It was reported yesterday that the MACC granted Mokhzani a 30-day extension to declare his assets.
Azam confirmed to a news portal that Mokhzani had officially applied to extend the period.
Last week, it was reported that Mirzan was given a 30-day extension to declare his assets.
The two sons of Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister are currently being probed by MACC and have been asked to declare their assets.
