KANGAR: Six secondary school students were discharged not amounting to acquittal by the Children's Court that presided in the magistrate's court here from a charge of rioting in the school compound last year.

Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim delivered the verdict following an agreement among the students' families to resolve the matter out of court.

According to the charge, all the accused aged 17, were involved in an illegal gathering to take part in a brawl between 10.45am and 11am on Aug 1 last year at an open space next to the school canteen.

The charge was framed under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tengku Ruqayyah Tengku Shahrom prosecuted while lawyer Ch'ng De Sern represented all accused.

All the accused were jointly charged on Nov 10, 2023, where no plea was recorded.

Meanwhile, Ch'ng said his clients and their respective family members welcomed the decision as they wished to settle the matter out of court.

"Based on the discussion among the families involved, they have agreed to withdraw the case as they decided not to prolong the matter, besides all students involved have made peace with each other.

"This decision is also crucial for the students as they are sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations end of this year," he said.
