SHAH ALAM: Former Kapar member of parliament S. Manikavasagam was fined RM100, in default three days' imprisonment, by the magistrates court here for using insulting words in January.

The sentence was meted out by magistrate Sasha Diana Sabtu after the 59-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

According to the charge sheet, Manikavasagam had behaved rudely by sending a message to a person with the intention of provoking ire and breaching the peace.

He was alleged to have committed the offence at a house in Subang Jaya at 3.27pm on Jan 4.

Under the Minor Offences Act 1955, any person who uses any indecent, threatening, abusive or insulting words with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, or where a breach of the peace is likely to occur, is liable to a fine of up to RM100.

In mitigation before sentencing, Manikavasagam said he was now a holder of a persons with disability card due to eyesight problems and was willing to pay whatever fine the court imposed.

He was unrepresented while prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Annur Athirah Amran.

Manikavasagam was Kapar MP for one term, between 2008 and 2013.

In April 2018, he resigned his posts and membership in PKR following his suspension in August 2017.
