PRAI: Police have detained a motorcyclist and his pillion rider who were caught on video riding dangerously on the Penang Bridge yesterday.

The man, in his 50s, and the woman, in her 30s, were detained in George Town today.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said they would be produced in court for remand tomorrow.

"We have detained the motorcyclist and pillion rider, who are believed to be the duo featured in the video footage, which has since gone viral..

"Checks showed both had three previous criminal cases in 2021 and 2023 but were not on the wanted list.

"We have yet to establish the relationship between the duo," he said.

The case is being probed under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Helmi said that about 12.30am today, police came across a Facebook video of a motorcyclist and pillion rider riding in a dangerous manner, with the pillion rider throwing what is believed to be sand at motorcyclists trying to overtake them.

They were also seen trying to kick at those overtaking them.

Helmi urged those with information or who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Earlier today, the "New Straits Times" reported that police were tracking down a motorcyclist and his pillion rider, who were caught on video riding dangerously along the Penang Bridge yesterday.

No report has been lodged yet.

According to a Facebook user, the motorcyclist rode his dangerously.

He said: "I got sand on my face. Luckily, I am patient. Otherwise, I would have kicked the motorcycle."
