KUALA LUMPUR: The Penang High Court today recorded a consent judgment in a suit filed by controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik against former PKR Batu Uban assemblyman S. Raveentharan after both parties settled the suit amicably.

Zakir filed the suit against Raveentharan on Dec 12, 2019, claiming that the former assemblyman had uploaded five defamatory statements on Facebook between Oct 13 and 17, the same year.

According to the document sighted by the New Straits Times, the plaintiff (Zakir) and defendant (Raveentharan) have reached an amicable settlement outside the court as agreed upon by the parties.

However, the terms of settlement could not be disclosed.

The plaintiff (Zakir) in his statement of claim asserted that the impugned statements were made with malice, hatred, and envy, without first confirming the matter with him.

Zakir claimed that the defendant (Raveentharan) had depicted him as a malicious individual and was threat to the country's security, peace, and harmony.

He claimed that the impugned statements were entirely baseless, untrue, fabricated, and false.

Zakir is seeking an order to compel Raveentharan to remove the impugned statements from the websites, social media and all related mediums.

He is also seeking general, aggravated, exemplary damages, and compensation, as well as other relief deemed fit by the court.
