SEPANG: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will call in one former prime minister as early as this week in their investigation on the RM700 million spent by the previous federal administration on the "Keluarga Malaysia" promotion and publicity work.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said they are investigating how the money was spent.

Azam said the former prime minister, his predecessor and the people from his office would be the last people to be called in for the investigation.

"Only one of them (former prime minister) would be called in, as for now... as early as this week and latest early next week.

"We are addressing the RM700 million issue. What's important is how the money has been spent.

"We don't have so much query on how it was approved but (we have queries) on how it was spent and the companies that they spent the money on," he said to reporters after the Good Governance Symposium 2024, here, today.

Azam aid it was a normal procedure to investigate the matter, adding that they had called the companies that received the projects.

"Yes (it is a normal procedure). When there is an allegation, our duty is to investigate and our investigation also covers how the money is being spent," he said.

When asked how many people have been called in, Azam said: "Not less than four."

On Jan 2, the New Straits Times reported that MACC has teams scouring the Finance Ministry and Prime Minister's Department for documents linked to the previous administration's spending for the "Keluarga Malaysia" promotion campaign.

MACC was reported to be probing allegations of excessive amounts of funds being spent on the promotion of campaigns in previous administrations following public outcry and reports lodged.
