SEMPORNA: The Semporna Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized four boats for being involved in fish bombing activities Northeast of Cape Tabu-Tabu near here.

During the incident yesterday evening, district Maritime zone director Maritime Commander Amir Shubli said two of their boats were patrolling the area.

"Upon arrival at the location, the crew spotted four unregistered boats floating suspiciously in shallow waters.

"When approached for inspection, the boat skippers and their crew jumped into the sea and fled to nearby land areas.

"Upon inspection, a total of approximately 50 kg of fish, as well as glass bottles containing suspected explosives used for fish bombing activities, were found on two of the seized boats," he said in a statement, adding the total seizure was estimated to be around RM20,000.

Amir added that the case will be investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985, Section 26 for catching fish using explosives, poison, and others.

He said MMEA will not compromise with any individuals engaged in fish bombing activities, as it not only violates the law but also jeopardises tourism activities, especially for divers.

He also said such an activity can have a negative impact on marine ecosystems and may cause severe injuries and deaths.
