KUALA LUMPUR: Having a weak personality is one of the reasons why some members of the police force are involved in criminal activities, thereby affecting the credibility of the Royal Malaysia Police.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said that greed and a thirst for luxury are what drive a small number of police personnel to get involved in misconduct and wrongdoing.

However, he noted that only a small number of personnel in the force have integrity issues, and more than 90 per cent of the over 10,000 members and officers serving in Kuala Lumpur work with dedication.

"I disagree if it is said that many police personnel are involved in wrongdoing; out of 10,000 personnel in Kuala Lumpur, only 10 have ever committed offences, indicating that less than one percent are problematic.

"Supervision of members also plays a role, but the main cause (of misconduct) is personal weakness, a desire for a luxurious lifestyle, and greed. This is what we are addressing.

"Those involved need to be removed from the force, and society should appreciate the remaining majority who work hard to maintain social harmony," he said during a media session for the Kuala Lumpur Police Chief's Walkabout Programme, held here, today.

Commenting on the six members from a district police headquarters in the capital who were detained, he said all of them have been suspended from duty while an investigation is being completed.

"Four of them have been suspended from duty, we are waiting for the chemical report. If they test positive (for drugs), we will submit the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) for charges," he said.

In a separate development, Allaudeen said that the four policemen alleged to have extorted a civilian at an apartment in Kepong on Jan 4 have now been suspended from duty.

"We have completed the investigation into this case, and they will be charged soon. I reiterate once again that the police will not compromise with the wrongdoing of its members," he said.
