GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained five men to assist investigation into a fight at a flat in Jalan Sungai here early this morning.

Acting northeast district police chief Superintendent V. Saravanan said one of the men nabbed sustained injuries to his head and was covered in blood.

He was brought to the Penang Hospital for treatment.

"We were alerted to the fight involving a group of local men at the flat about 2.30am.

"A team of police was despatched to the scene. As soon as they arrived, they apprehended a man, who was covered in blood following injuries to his head.

"The suspect was then holding a pistol but nothing untoward happened," he said today.

Saravanan said another four men were also nabbed at the scene.

He said policemen on two motorcycles also gave chase to a fleeing car.

"A crash happened between the two motorcycles and the car.

"Initial investigation revealed the cause of the fight was due to a misunderstanding between the group of men.

"We seized a pistol and a sharp weapon, believed to have been used in the fight," he added.

Saravanan said the suspects, aged between 24 and 34, are being probed under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960.

"All those detained have been remanded to assist in investigation into the case," he added.
