KUALA LUMPUR: An attempt to smuggle pork meat and sausages by concealing them at the back of a vehicle in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, failed after the tactic was uncovered by the authorities.

Kedah Maqis (Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department) director, Hisham Abu Bakar, said they uncovered the illegal concealment through cooperation with the Bukit Kayu Hitam General Operation Force (GOF).

"As a result of further inspection, 32 kilogrammes (kg) of pork meat and sausages were found hidden in a compartment at the back of the vehicle to deceive the authorities.

"All the items were seized for further action under Section 11(1) of the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.

"If found guilty, those accused can face punishment of a prison term of up to six years and a fine not more than RM100,000 or both upon conviction," he said in a statement yesterday (Dec 5).

He said that the seizure was due to concerted, joint efforts to control and curb the entry of pork products to prevent the spread of African Swine Flu (ASF).

"Joint efforts in law enforcement through cooperation and collaborations between law enforcement agencies will be further enhanced.

"This is to ensure that plants, carcasses, fish and agricultural produce are free of threats of infectious diseases and pests while complying with the conditions and regulations that have been set," he said.
