KUCHING: A Form Two student was arrested by police in connection with the discovery of a baby who was found dumped in the bushes in the residential area of Lorong 19 Cahaya Damai, Bandar Baru Samariang here.

Kuching district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahsmon Bajah, said police arrested the 14-year-old girl in the Matang area at 8pm last night.

"The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code which provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years or a fine or both," he said when contacted, today.

Ahsmon said his party was informed of the discovery of the baby girl from the public at 9am yesterday.

Police rushed to the location and found that the baby was still alive and in a healthy condition.

"The baby has been taken to the Sarawak General Hospital for further examination and will be referred to the Social Welfare Department for further action," he said.

A video of the baby's discovery went viral on social media, showing the baby still alive and with an intact umbilical cord.

It is understood that the baby was found in a plastic bag after residents heard her crying.

A woman was seen holding the baby and carrying it to a nearby eatery, with a concerned crowd helping to clean the baby up.
