ALOR STAR: Police are in pursuit of an individual suspected of committing animal cruelty on a stray cat, following the widespread circulation of a distressing video on social media.

Kota Star acting district police chief superintendent Syed Basri Syed Ali expressed grave concern after a video depicting the incident surfaced on Twitter at 4:30 pm yesterday.

He said the police received a report from a member of the public over the incident on Sept 29 at 11.30 pm.

"Early investigation indicated that the incident occurred on Sept 28 at 10.56 am.

Syed Basri said that the case is still under investigation and efforts are ongoing to identify the suspect.

"The case is investigated under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, which stipulates penalties of a fine not less than RM20,000 and not exceeding RM100,000, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or both, upon conviction," he added.

He also advised all individuals to refrain from making speculations and exercise caution in using social media to avoid causing distress to the community.
