KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 6,654 traffic summonses were issued throughout the second phase of an anti-road offences operation launched by the city police.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Sarifudin Mohd Salleh said of that amount, the highest number of offences was on obstructing traffic with 5,052 summonses issued.

The operation is dubbed 'Operasi Hormat Undang-Undang Jalan Raya' (Respecting Road Regulations Operation) by the Kuala Lumpur police.

"Among the other offences are vehicles placed along pedestrian paths and on white lines (233), driving without a licence (four), registration number issues (39), traffic light violations (23) and others (1,198).

"Also, the Road Transport Department (RTD) issued 225 summonses for various offenses," he said in a statement today.

Sarifuddin said 13 people were detained for cases related to drugs, immigration and various criminal offences.

"A total of 28 operations were conducted yesterday involving 'Op Mabuk', 'Op Motosikal', 'Op Perdagangan', 'Op Khas' , 'Op Pelbagai', 'Op Halatuju', 'Op Halangan', 'Op Utama (mobile phones) ' and 'Op Utama (traffic lights).

"Any individual issued with a summons during the operations which will run until Sept 29 are not eligible for a reduction in fines or discount," he said.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid had previously said the second phase of the operation would focus on 16 different locations around the city between Sept 15-29.

This enforcement operation, which is aimed to impose stricter action on offenders focused on seven major offences of illegal parking, road obstruction, traffic light violations including stopping beyond the white line or on a pedestrian crossing, vehicle registration plates, window tinting offences, motorcycles and to serve an educational purpose.
