SHAH ALAM: A 36-year-old assistant engineer has been fined RM80,000 at the Sessions Court after pleading guilty to receiving RM10,000 bribe.

Judge Datuk Anita Harun also ordered Zabidi Zahari to serve a 12 months jail term if he failed to pay the fine.

Zabidi pleaded guilty to receiving bribes from Muhamad Amir Redza Joemane as an incentive to certify the completion of the repair and renovation works, and other related works at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras Perdana, Selangor worth RM354,051.00.

He was accused of committing the offence at Restoran De Bravia Tomyam Seafood, Bandar Baru Bangi on May 17 last year.

His charge were framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009 (Act 694), which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Muaz Ahmad bin Khairuddin prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Mohd Baharudin Ahmad Kassim.
